Former Minister Udaya Gammanpila has filed a petition with the Supreme Court seeking a ruling that certain provisions of the Protection of the State from Terrorism Bill, presented to Parliament by the government, are inconsistent with the Constitution.
The Attorney General has been named as the respondent in the petition.
The petitioner claimed that certain provisions of the proposed bill violate the fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution, Media Report said.
Accordingly, the petitioner has requested the Supreme Court to rule that the disputed provisions, if enacted, must be approved by a two-thirds majority in Parliament and endorsed by the people at a referendum.
