Colombo, Sri Lanka: Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa has met with M.A. Sumanthiran, PC, the General Secretary of the Ilankai Thamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK), to discuss the upcoming anti-government protest rally organized by the Opposition, scheduled for this Friday, the 21st.
Rajapaksa briefed Sumanthiran on the rally, which is being organized by opposition parties against the National People’s Power (NPP) government and its alleged failure to deliver on the promises made to the people.
Speaking about the meeting, Namal Rajapaksa noted that while the ITAK will not directly participate in the protest, it was important to clarify the rally’s agenda and the key issues they intend to raise, given ITAK’s position as a major opposition party.
During the discussion, both parties reportedly shared a common concern and stressed the need for Provincial Council elections to be held without further delay, as they have been continuously postponed under the current government.
Parliamentarian Rajapaksa expressed concern over the persistent deferral of these elections, stating that Provincial Council polls are essential for strengthening local governance and that their conduct in accordance with the Constitution is paramount. The meeting highlighted a shared vision among the opposition to criticize the government and safeguard democratic processes.
