William Angliss Institute @ SLIIT – The Place for Aspiring Hoteliers to Gain World Class Hospitality Education

(COLOMBO, Sri Lanka) – William Angliss Institute @ SLIIT hosted a networking and awareness event for media representatives and other stakeholders to provide awareness about the range of courses and programs offered by the institute whilst also shedding light on the importance of the hospitality and hotel sector in Sri Lanka. The event took place on 7 th November 2023 at William Angliss Institute @ SLIIT,which is located within the SLIIT Malabe premises. The William Angliss Institute @ SLIIT is Sri Lanka’s largest hotel school and is a joint venture between William Angliss Institute (WAI) Australia.

William Angliss Institute @ SLIIT has also partnered with Resplendent Ceylon, the leading luxury hotel operator in Sri Lanka, to unveil “The Resplendent Academy by William Angliss Institute at SLIIT". The campus, which will commence operations on 14 th November, is strategically located at Cape Weligama, a Relais & Chateaux resort and provides students with first-hand exposure to the sector, allowing them the chance to experience a challenging and exciting work environment in the process of learning.

The hospitality and tourism industry is one of the fastest-growing and most dynamic sectors in the world, offering a wide range of career opportunities for qualified and skilled professionals. According to industry experts, programs such as commercial cookery, travel and tourism management, event management, hospitality management and patisserie segments will require more trained workers in the coming years in order to meet the increasing demand in Sri Lanka. Therefore, it is clear that a career in commercial cookery, travel and tourism management, event management, hospitality management and patisserie will ensure a bright and secure future for hospitality students in the long term, both locally and internationally.

Participants who were invited to the briefing were first, taken on a campus tour around the institute, where they had a chance to experience state-of-the-art facilities and equipment that were made available for their students. This involved getting a glimpse into the institute’s kitchen areas and classrooms where learning sessions are conducted and where students would practice their craft under the guidance of experienced and qualified lecturers. This was then followed by a discussion by members of the head table who shared their insights and updates about the institute, followed by a Q&A session.

The head table at the event was occupied by the following representatives of William Angliss Institute @ SLIIT: Anuk Weerasinghe – Managing Director, Nivran Weerakoon – Board member, Ravindra Ranjith – Deputy Centre Director, Academic Affairs and Business Development, Kiran Chand – Assistant Director of Sales & Marketing, Steven Bradie-Miles – Representative, William Angliss Institute Melbourne and Lecturer and Gayani Jayathilake – Deputy Centre Director, Finance and Operations.

The institute offers a range of courses and programs covering an array of disciplines within the
hospitality and tourism sectors. Prospective students can now enrol in short courses such as the Pastry & Baking and Barista courses. The Certificate 1 in Hospitality can be completed in two and a half months.

Other programs, which can be completed in one year and a half include the Certificate in Commercial Cookery, the Certificate in Patisserie course and the Advanced Diploma of Travel & Tourism Management. The Advanced Diploma of Hospitality Management and Diploma program in Event Management are both, two-year programs. There are three intakes in a year, and students can apply during the months of April, August and December.
