Under the inspiring theme “Light a Lamp for Sri Lanka this Deepavali: Let us all unite to spread hope and prosperity across our beautiful island,” a special Deepavali celebration has been organized in Colombo.
The event is hosted by the Alumni Association of the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) scheme, in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Wattala and the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre.
The grand celebration is scheduled to take place on Friday, November 6, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Sudarshi Hall in Colombo 07.
Encouraging public participation, the ITEC Alumni Association stated that even five minutes of one’s time can make a massive difference. They have cordially invited people to join with their family and friends to light a lamp together as a symbol of unity and hope.
Highlighting the cultural significance of the festival, the association noted that Deepavali is one of the most prominent and important festivals for Hindus, celebrated with immense enthusiasm by Tamil and Hindu communities in Sri Lanka and across the globe.
Literally translating to a “row of lamps,” Deepavali symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil. According to Hindu epics, it marks the joyous return of Lord Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile, as well as Lord Krishna’s victory over the demon Narakasura.
On this auspicious day, people decorate their homes with traditional oil lamps and vibrant kolams, wear new attire, share traditional sweets, and burst firecrackers. Beyond the festivities, it serves as a meaningful occasion for families and friends to come together in joy and love.
In the Sri Lankan context, Deepavali transcends religious boundaries, standing as a golden opportunity for people of all communities to exchange greetings and foster inter-ethnic harmony, peace, and goodwill across the nation.
