Former IGP C.D. Wickramaratne found dead in apparent suicide

It has been reported that former Inspector General of Police (IGP) C.D. Wickramaratne has been found dead and is suspected to have committed suicide. According to sources, he had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at his residence in Athurugiriya.

C.D. Wickramaratne, who served in the Sri Lanka Police for more than 30 years, was the country’s 35th Inspector General of Police.

Prior to his appointment as IGP, Wickramaratne served as the Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police for the Southern Province.

Following the Easter Sunday bomb attacks and the subsequent compulsory leave imposed on then-IGP Pujith Jayasundara, Wickramaratne was appointed as the Acting Inspector General of Police.

He was later confirmed as Inspector General of Police on November 25, 2020, and continued in the position until his retirement on November 25, 2023.
